We love forward-thinking devs like Accusonus. They have their fair share of cutting edge tech and are releasing the type of plugins that fulfill a specific need for many producers and engineers. We were pretty excited to see Beatformer hit the streets this morning and couldn’t help but be curious after hearing so much great feedback regarding the benefits of ‘Drum Bus’ in Ableton 10, Accusonus had our complete attention. Beatformer is a very simple,
nicely laid out plugin that does one thing – it adds ‘shine’ to your drum bus. However after about five minutes of playing around with it we realized that it’s exceptional on any overtly transient or percussive material. It all begins on the left with the ‘Boom’ knob which does a great job of dialing in low end heft, with Accusonus cleverly providing a drop down menu of musical keys, allowing you to fine tune the low end in a fundamentaly musical fashion.

“… the main four controls are very well thought out and created to make a huge difference to the overall sound very, very quickly.”
‘Squash’ actually comes after ‘Punch’ in the plugin’s signal flow with the general idea being that it dynamically controls frequencies after the transients have been processed with ‘Punch’. The ‘Air’
control is actually not an EQ – it’s more of an exciter when cranked and a de-sizzler when used in the minus zone (replacing the need for a de esser on cymbals for instance). Finally, ‘High Split’ enables you to pinpoint
a crossover frequency from 4kHz to 12kHz between the Air control and Punch/Squash. The idea is to help you keep some separation between similar sounds like claps and snaps or certain percussions.
If you break it down Beatformer is simply a transient shaper, saturator and compressor crammed together but in operation it’s far more sophisticated than the sum of it’s parts. At APN we love effective, high value plugins like Beatformer. In fact any plug that combines multiple disciplines like
Beatformer, to enhance specific elements of a production is worth consideration. At $79.00 Beatformer is definitely worth every penny and will probably get pulled into play more and more often as you get used to re-placing chains of plugins and other long-winded operations.
