Tales from The Beat House

What do Gucci Mane, Drake, Future, Young Thug, Zaytoven, Metro Boomin and Migos have in common?

Meet Djwill-Nodj – a quietly spoken man who describes himself as one fifth of the busy studio team Beatkamp Productions. Their resume is a sparkling testament to what most young producer’s dream about when they start exploring the world of beatmaking.

Beatkamp consists of producers Djwill-Nodj, LE, Blaze, B Dash and Byron and they’ve worked with an impressive list of artists. From heavy hitters like Trey Songz, Lil Wayne, Bird Man and Jim Jones to the fluent vocal artistry of Mya and Lil Mo, to TI’s larger than life Grand Hustle, Yung Lan, Yonni, Cassius Jay and Shawty Redd to corporate cash cows like Walmart and Vh1 – this team has achieved an awful lot in a relatively short space of time.

Where it all Began

Djwill was just five years old when he started playing both drums and piano but he also  mentions that he was interested in lyrics – a skill that up and coming producers would be wise to invest their own time in. Primarily because it helps you to bring a stronger package to the table as a producer/writer but also because when you’re tracking artists in the studio as a recording engineer it gives you a better understanding of how to help them get through lyric problems whilst they’rein the booth.

How did you get Started as a Producer?

“I was honestly nurtured by my parents,” he states “I Played in a marching band when I was in high school.” This gave him a lot of in depth knowledge about complex rhythms and what makes a beat truly dope. “At 14, I got a Korg Triton and an MPC.” He remembers “I spent a great deal of time learning how to use them properly!” It was during this period of growth that his talent caught the ears of local studio impressario, LE (Lemael Ervin), an upcoming producer from the same, Cleveland Ohio area.

Tell us about 'The Beat House Kits'

“Lemael was and still is my mentor,” Djwill explains, “and it was with him that I decided to start Beat House Kits.” A boutique, online marketplace for urban producers to load up their samplers with relevant, cutting edge sounds. The type of sounds that are being heard in the urban and pop markets’ biggest hit records. “In fact,” he states, “all of our products are on major albums and are receiving major radio airplay across the nation right now.”

The Plugin Game

“We started this business because firstly, we’re producers and we know what we have to go through to find the right sounds and stay creative.” He pauses, “Well other producers have to go through that too – we’re all tired of scrolling through millions and millions of sounds.” A statement which utters a murmur of approval from the room.
“You see, NI’s Kontakt lets us put all these great sounds in the same place – and then we can change them, focus in on their envelopes or just go hog wild with sound design right inside that sampler.” A truism that many users of Kontakt, UVI’s Falcon or VPS’ Phalanx would readily agree with.

“there’s a two to three year lead time for

creating a unique, VST Rompler.”

New Developments

“Kontakt – is cheaper to create libraries for than a dedicated VST.” Djwill mentions, “Although we’ve been planning something pretty special for quite some time, there’s a two to three year lead time for creating a unique, VST Rompler.” Which is their plan. When pushed on possible availability Will keeps tight lipped. “We’ll let you know for sure,” he tells APN, “but we still have a lot of development hours to put in.”

So What's Next?

Djwill-Nodj has a brand new beat tape that was released on March 10th – Djwill-Nodj: Beats 4 the Streets, Vol. 1: The Trap Essentials Beat Tape and it’s available on all major streaming outlets.

He’s also working on productions for Brian Angel (from Day 26 – P Diddy’s old group), King Fed (Def Jam, Don Flamingo (Roc Nation), K Michelle and various artists on TI’s Gran Hustle.

Djwill-Nodj is under the wing of Zaytoven’s manager, Digital Dope Ro, who is the owner of meettheproducers.org. He is featured on the website as one of the groups elite producers. For further information peep him out there.
