Modelling Experts Softube Reveal New Tape Plugin

Swedish Plug-Meisters Softube have finally created a reel to reel tape plugin – something that fans of the company are understandably excited about. ‘Tape’ features models of three different machines of diverse character and is apparently very light on CPU. TYPE A is based on a classic Swiss high-end reel-to-reel design, generally known and admired for its precision and linearity; TYPE B is a much more colourful affair — a transformer-based machine that adds weight and creaminess to the low end; and TYPE C is based on a British tape machine with a vintage vibe. For the cerebrally challenged the plugin can be simply dragged onto a track or bus and you’re in business. Select the type of machine and dial in an amount. There are presets from award-winning engineers like Joe Chiccarelli

(Beck, Strokes, U2) and Howard Willing (Kris Kristofferson, Sheryl Crow, Smashing Pumpkins) included with the plugin. With a vari-speed control that apparently has tape speeds that don’t actually exist in the real world it’s clear that Softube are trying to offer ‘Tape’ users increased flexibility. Other features include channel crosstalk, a mix control for parallel processing and the object of my personal interest a Start and Stop button. Tape stop effects are ten to the dozen but tape start? Presonus Studio One owners get a nice little sweetener with this plugin. As well as the standard ‘Tape’ they will get the option of a MixFX variant called Tape Multitrack, with makes available selectable crosstalk between individual tracks and control of all instances of the plug-in from one GUI.

Tape is available at an introductory price of $79 (normal price $99 after June 30) included with the license is the MixFX version for Studio One users called Tape Multitrack
