Gorillaz Announce Long-awaited new LP

Famed UK virtual pop band, Gorillaz is back with their fifth studio album and it’s packed full of surprising collaborations. Released on April 28th 2017 the album was recorded in New York, Chicago, Paris, London, and Jamaica. Gorillaz’ svengali Damon Albarn noted that with Humanz he has set out to create something not overtly political in nature, but a work that can be viewed as “an emotional response to politics”.  He set up the framework of every song using just an iPad and Garage Band. He is reported as saying to his collaborators, “imagine a future in which Donald Trump had won the 2016 US presidential election“, and then noting, “Unfortunately it came true”.  Albarn expressed his views on the unique style of the Gorillaz saying that he doesn’t necessarily believe there’s a sound per se but that sonically the group does change from record to record. This could be attributable, in part, to the diverse line up of artist collaborations Albarn has organized for this record – which would make an eclectic festival line on its own. There’s been a lot of press and promotion for Humanz including a new song entitled “Hallelujah Money”

featuring Benjamin Clementine which was released with a music video but, it was not the single. On March 23rd 2017 four new songs came out: “Saturnz Barz”, “Andromeda”, “We Got the Power” and “Ascension” all receiving play on various radio stations and all being made available for download that very same day. When the video for “Saturnz Barz” was released it had a certain historical significance as it was the first music video featuring the well known Gorillaz characters to surface since 2012’s “DoYaThing”. The Gorillaz have redesigned their website along with the announcement of a secret live concert at Printworks Nightclub, London, on March 24th 2017 in which they performed the album for the first time and made a livestream event for their fans on Facebook. The fifth single from Humanz, “Let Me Out” (featuring Mavis Staples and Pusha T) was released on April 6th 2017. The Collaborations aren’t merely musical though. Gorillaz have also created an ‘augmented reality’ app with Electronic Beats that was released on April 10th 2o17 and  is available on Apple and Android.
